King's Lynn race circuit prepares for annual Icebreaker event

One of the biggest team meetings in the world of banger racing – The British Open Team Championships – will open the 2023 calendar at the Adrian Flux Arena on Sunday (12 noon) for its 29th staging.

Better known as the Icebreaker, more than100 unlimited bangers are booked for what is a team meeting which features up to four cars per

team.

National banger team events are always full of action and this meeting has a reputation of being one of the most action-packed of the season.

Some of the biggest teams in the sport will be making the trip to compete in the championship.

The Yorkshire-based Silver Boys outfit and Team Extreme will be two of the outfits tipped for major honours whilst the southern based Posh Wash make an eagerly-anticipated appearance at Lynn.

West Norfolk race fans will be keen to see how the Predators perform.

Three teams have been entered by the outfit, which is regarded by many as the pride of East Anglia, and the team contains three Lynn-based drivers in the shape of captain Kieran Bowman, his brother Brad Bowman and veteran crowd pleaser Ady Groome.

Although prolific in national banger team events, the Predators have surprisingly struggled to make a real mark in the Unlimited Banger

Icebreaker.

Indeed they have only recorded one top-three finish in the event and that was in the most entertaining team league back in 2018 and will want to improve on that statistic on Sunday.

The Predators are not the only team to have Lynn-based drivers.

Darren Fendley – one of the stars on the micro banger teams back in December – has once again been seconded onto the Dover Boys.

This outfit finished second in the entertainer league last year and they will be looking to get amongst the silverware once again.

Harry Cobb and Ryley Freestone will be in action for Team Lynn Stars and both have lots of experience around the circuit.

The junior bangers are also in action where several local drivers will be looking to build on good finishes to 2022.

William Cartwright enjoyed the best possible finish to 2022 when he took his first race victory at the last meeting of the year, which also happened to be the final.

Morgan Bailey will be making a career first start from yellow whilst Jamie Steele is back to red after finishing second in the national points.

Jack Garrod junior made a great Lynn debut last time out and he will be looking to have made progress from that and Jack Smith will also be looking to continue the progress he made throughout 2022.
