Intrepid athletes in medal-winning form
West Norfolk Athletic Club's three intrepid para athletes were in medal-winning form at Chelmsford over the weekend at in the Eastern Regional Disability Championships.
Lily Edwards T20 (U17 W), Cameron Ross T20 (U23M) and Wesley Houghton T11 (SM) were all in action and returned home five gold and three silver medals between them.
Edwards opened the medal haul with a fine performance in a heavily-contested long jump competition.
Although not at her best, she manged to hold off the competition for first place and the gold with a jump of 1.99m.
Her next discipline was the 100m sprint where she ran an outstanding race to finish first with a new personal best, county and club record with a time 19.83s.
In her last event of the day, Edwards, who has been steadily improving over the last few months under the direction of her new throws coach Al Williams, registered a commendable throw of 3.94m in the shot putt to take silver.
An in-form Ross, who has been working hard on his stamina in recent weeks, was rewarded with top spot in a highly-contested race and gold in the 200m, where he narrowly missing out on a PB with a season's best time of 27.92s.
Ross went straight into long jump action and, although he jumped a commendable 4.38m, he was disappointed to take second place and silver, although he will continue to improve over the course of the season as he gets nearer to his five-metre goal.
In his final and favourite event of the 110m, Ross was pipped to second place and silver again with a very good time of 13.83s.
Wesley Houghton, running with a blin fold and assisted by his guide runner Aaron Raine, didn't disappoint to run a tremendous 200m for first place and the gold with a time of 27.94s.
Houghton, who continues to get better with the guidance of his sprint coach Wally Oliver and the assistance of his guide runners, repeated his success in the 100m with a time of 13.59s.
Special thanks to the WNAC coaching team of Paul Edwards, Sally Edwards, Wally Oliver and Al Williams for their professional guidance and support.
