West Norfolk vets enjoy some home comforts
West Norfolk AC veteran athletes enjoyed a successful home meeting in the second league match of the EMAC series at Lynnsport on Wednesday.
The club's men's team won the meeting, finishing ahead of some much larger athletics clubs, while the women's team, who only had four competitors, battled hard to finish sixth on the evening.
In the M35 category, Ben Collison had an impressive run in the 800m to win in a time of 2.20.0.
Neil Watson was second on his 110m hurdles debut.
Allan Williams threw well with second in the javelin (28.35m) and third in the discus (23.08m).
Lee Tunmore was fifth in the walk and sixth in the long jump.
In the M50 category, Geoff Powley won the 100m hurdles in 21.4s and was second in the pole vault before becoming unwell.
John Greenhalgh was fifth in the 800m, registering a time of 2.51.0
Ricky Bailey was third in both the javelin (21.1m) and discus (18.93m) while Bob Vincent managed fourth in the 200m (30.8s) and long jump (3.86m).
Ian Reeve, representing the club in the M60 category, won the javelin (30.32m) and 100m hurdles (20.6s) and was also second in the pole vault.
John Moore finished second in the M60 200m (31s) and fifth in the discus.
The men's V50 4x400m relay team of Greenhalgh, Bailey, Moore and Vincent finished second.
But perhaps the most impressive performance of the whole night was in the V35 relay team.
With West Norfolk nursing a couple of injuries on the evening, Williams, predominately a thrower, ran the anchor leg with Collison, Watson and Tunmore.
He brought the baton home in fifth, running the final 250m through treacle, but has almost recovered now.
In the W35 women's team there were highly-impressive wins for Katrina Wasteney in the 1500m A walk, Debbie Schwarz in the 1500m B walk and Louise Rice in the 100m hurdles (24.2s).
Wasteney was third in the 800m (2.56) and fourth in the javelin (13.07m).
Schwarz attempted a 200m to come fifth.
Unfortunately Rice pulled a calf competing in the long jump to finish sixth.
Hannah Marsters, on her debut, competed in the discus, finishing sixth with a throw of 8.27m
Thanks to all officials and volunteers for making the home meeting such a success.
