West Norfolk swimmers in the medals at championships




Swimmers from West Norfolk Swimming Club made a real splash at the East Region 2018 Long Course Championships by bringing home an array of medals.

Between them, the team amassed four gold, two silver and six bronze medals to put them in eighth place overall among the 30 clubs represented at the event.

The competition took place in Norwich on the early May bank holiday weekend and there were a number of highlights during the hottest weekend of the year so far.

The highlight of Finlay Ryan's weekend was PB in the heat of the 200m Individual Medley, and then taking off almost two further seconds in the final to become the East region champion.

Lucie Peck (15yrs) qualified and swam in 10 events, claiming a bronze medal in the 400m freestyle and silver in the 400m IM.

Freddie Laws (15yrs) achieved PBs in nearly every event on his was to bronze in the 100 breaststroke final and gold in the 200m showpiece.

Samuel Rose (15yrs) raced in nine events, picking up bronze in the 50m freestyle in the process, while Roxanne Uys picked up a pair of bronze medals in the 50m and 200m breaststroke distances.

Bryony Pack (17yrs) qualified for the 100m final, finishing in eighth, while Ellie Mei Shepperson (15yrs) achieved personal best times to qualify for the finals in three distances.

Other swimmers competing were: Alex Florance, Alfie Randall, Jenn Read, Joe Wells, Samuel Peck, Rosie Muspratt, Rachael Johnson, Oliver Kenny, Oliver Harris, Lara Grace Mount and Luke Bryan, who was perhaps the busiest competitor of all with 11 events.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will see the introduction of 800m mens and 1500m womens freestyle events.

Swim England have introduced these ‘reverse distance’ events at Regional Championships for the first time this year, and a competition was held for them at Basildon Sporting Village.

Lucie Peck (15yrs), competing in the 1500m freestyle, took silver in her age group in a time of 18 mins, 4.38 seconds.

Harry Sharpe (13yrs), Luke Bryan (18yrs) and Robert Addis (14yrs) all finished eighth in their respective age groups and Sam Rose (15yrs) finished seventh in his.

This weekend, it’s the turn of the younger swimmers to compete at their regional championships, when they are held over the three day weekend at Luton Inspire Sports Village.
