Review: Coppelia, Varna International Ballet, Theatre Royal, Norwich

This international ballet company, which originated in Varna in Bulgaria, now boasts dancers from Britain, France, Spain, Italy, Ukraine and more.

It is 75 years old but makes its first visit to Norwich this week, with three separate ballets including Giselle and Swan Lake.

Its Coppelia is charming and highly accessible, making it a perfect option for those with young aspiring dancers in the family.

It’s a traditional piece, with the young dancers performing it beautifully, with some excellent set pieces, all executed with perfect precision.

As with many great ballets, there is a pair of confused lovers, a case or two of mistaken identity, and toys that come to life. It is based around an eccentric toy maker’s workshop but there is, fortunately, a happy ending!

The live orchestra plays the rousing Delibes score with vigour, and special mention must go to Andrea Conforti who plays the doll, Coppelia, performing her stiff, almost automated movements with remarkable realism.

The company is in residence until Wednesday (8th), performing Swan Lake and Giselle.
