All Saints’ Church in Shouldham invites guest to talk about Norfolk’s famous angelic church roofs for its first fundraising event of year

All Saints’ Church in Shouldham has announced its first fundraising event of the year.

Dr Sarah Cassell has been invited along to the event on Friday, March 21 at 7pm, to talk about Norfolk’s famous angelic church roofs, on which subject she has written her PhD thesis - ‘Structure and image in late medieval East Anglian angel roofs’.

She is donating her time and expertise to a talk on this fascinating subject. “All Saints’ Church has an intriguing variation on the angel roof, and its 15th century hammer-beam construction is an under-appreciated feature of this small but lovely rural parish church,” a spokesperson said.

“The figures holding up the beams are ambiguous and could be angels or mortals – perhaps previous residents of Shouldham immortalised in wood over 500 years ago – and is a particularly unique feature of the church.”

Attendees are being encouraged to bring their own torch to help better illuminate the roof while enjoying Dr Cassell’s talk.

This is one of a series of events aimed at raising much-needed funding for the restoration of the church, for which a campaign is getting under way this year.

Tickets are £10 and will include the first drink and canapes, although additional donations will be welcomed via contactless giving or other means.

Tickets are available on Eventbrite by searching for All Saints’ Church, Shouldham, or by reserving a place by phoning 01366 347856 and paying at the door.
