Review of Disenchanted by Watlington Players: Girl power delivered by all-female cast pulls off hilarious, sweary show

I think it is fair to say that for a village group, the Watlington Players always deliver a spectacular show.

Whether it be a Christmas panto or one of the many other shows it puts on, there is some great local talent which makes the show fabulous.

From seeing previous productions by the group, I was really excited to see its latest show, Disenchanted, which had an all-female cast.

Telling the “true stories” of the Disney princesses, each character brought a bundle of laughs to the show.

Every princess had a song to share their story, and not only were they funny, but also quite educational too. I didn’t know anything about Pocahontas’ true story prior to seeing Disenchanted!

Don’t be fooled though, this is not a production for children. Advertised as being for people aged 14 and over, there was plenty of swearing and adult humour. I had the song “Big T*ts” stuck in my head for ages afterwards!

Each cast member brought something fantastic to the show. Cinderella, played by Megan Abbott, delivered a ditsy and comical performance, while Sleeping Beauty, played by Dorcia Bowden-Noble, made the crowd laugh while dozing off.

I loved the Little Mermaid, played by Lydia Dennis, too. She played a great Texan drunk mermaid singing a karaoke-style ballad.

I have to mention Rapunzel too, played by Beccy Pooley, who made you forget Tangled altogether and played a much tougher, German princess. Me and my friend Liv absolutely loved her!

The singing throughout was great too. I thought Maddie Cole, who played Pocahontas, had a beautiful voice as well as Emily Blake who played The Princess Who Kissed The Frog.

The live band onstage was also superb and played along with the comedic performances of the princesses in front of them. Their presence really added to the show. I must add that the cast had great on-stage chemistry with each other!

Performances took place last Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with the latter two days being sold out.
