That’s Entertainment: Andy Tyler discusses upcoming events in and around King’s Lynn, including circus, quiz nights and play
In his weekly That’s Entertainment column, Andy Tyler looks at some exciting upcoming events…
It certainly seems the time of year for new art exhibitions locally and I recommend visiting True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum for the latest, entitled The Art of Friendship, which is currently on display. Why not visit the museum, view the exhibition and enjoy refreshments? For further information, visit the museum’s website or phone 01553 770479.
For quiz enthusiasts, there are several opportunities to enjoy sessions locally.
At Mr P’s Bar, Ferry Lane, Jeff Hoyle is running a quiz night next Friday, starting at 7.30pm. It is £5 per head to enter, and proceeds go to True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum. Teams consist of six members, so you can come as a team or join one on the night. To register, or for more information, contact Ros on 01553 761890 or r.harre@btinternet.com
Another quiz night is being held at Reffley Hall on the evening of Friday, April 25, also starting at 7.30pm. Teams of six maximum and participants are asked to bring their own food and drink. Entry is just £2 per person.
International Women’s Day saw plenty of celebrations recently. Although the day has now passed, I notice The Arts Society of North West Norfolk is holding an illustrated talk at Sedgeford Village Hall, starting at 2pm on Monday, May 12. Dr Suzanne Fagence Cooper’s focus is on two centuries of photography through the lenses of women and is entitled The Female Gaze - Photography from Julia Margaret Cameron to Lee Miller.
For full details of all The Arts Society’s events, and how to join, visit: www.theartssocietynwnorfolk.org.uk the society is also on Facebook.
A brief reminder there are just a few days left to enjoy a Circus Mondao show. Performances are this evening at 6pm, tomorrow at 2pm and 5pm and the last, Sunday, at 2pm only. Get to Knights Hill, Grimston Road, PE30 3HQ for all the fun!
For lovers of a good spy story, and those interested in international espionage, my film recommendation of the week is Steven Soderbergh’s latest movie Black Bag. Who is the traitor, could it even be the wife of the spook investigator? Intriguing stuff. The movie has had good reviews, being knowledgeable about spy slang is an advantage, and fans of Pierce Brosnan will be pleased he makes some brief appearances in the film.
St George’s Day, Wednesday, April 23 is when the book club that comes together at The Stuart House Hotel, Goodwin’s Road, will meet next. The book being discussed is Scott Mariani’s thriller The Mozart Conspiracy, published by Avon Books. The meeting time is 5pm and refreshments will be available. The book is my recommendation of the week. I will let readers know if there is any change of venue when the club meets next.
Book clubs are, of course, available to join at various places locally. Your local library is likely to have one and a group of friends could, of course, form one of their own. A library has plenty of information connected with local clubs and societies if you’re looking to join up and make some new friends!
Tonight at 7pm and tomorrow at 2.30pm, The King’s Lynn Players are presenting performances of The Curious Incident of The Dog In The Night-Time adapted from Mark Haddon’s novel by Simon Stephens. The show is being performed at Springwood High School Studio Theatre, Queensway, Lynn. If interested, see if tickets are still available by contacting 01553 764864.
It’s always worth visiting The Workshop of Lynn either in person or online to see what’s going on. Courses and events connected with the performing arts are always taking place. Visit: theworkshop.org.uk for further details.
Over at The Princess Theatre, Hunstanton, you can sing along to your favourite Mod hits with the cool Goldhawks! It’s all go a week Saturday, March 29. The theatre’s box office is open daily from 10am. Phone 01485 532252.
Lastly, Lynn’s Alive Corn Exchange Theatre has, as usual, a great variety of entertainment on offer for all. Next week Jason Donovan is DOIN’ FINE 25 and The Comedy Club is held.
The shows take place on Wednesday, March 26 and Thursday, March 27, respectively!
