That’s Entertainment: Andy Tyler discusses upcoming events in and around King’s Lynn, including musical evening, book recommendations and Easter events

In his weekly That’s Entertainment column, Andy Tyler looks at some exciting upcoming events…

We are lucky in Lynn and West Norfolk to be able to enjoy many special events connected with the arts and heritage.

A very special event which took place recently was The Diana Bullock Annual Memorial Lecture given by Tim FitzHigham, the famous comedian, actor, author, record holder, and council cultural officer.

Tim was born in Lynn, so he has a special close interest in the subject of his lecture: Robert Armin, Shakespeare’s comedian and son of Lynn.

The fascinating and entertaining presentation was enjoyed by a full audience at, appropriately, Lynn’s Shakespeare Barn and the talk was enthusiastically received.

I recommend Tim’s book ‘All At Sea One man. One bathtub. One very bad idea’, published by Preface books, which was featured during the evening, not connected with the subject of the talk, but describing Tim’s 200-mile journey in his antique bath tub across the channel and around Kent, then receiving a tremendous reception under Tower Bridge. He even met the Queen and his tub is exhibited in The National Maritime Museum. Wow!

Another book to look out for being published very soon is by Dr Paul Richards entitled ‘King’s Lynn: A Potted History’, published by Amberley Publishing.

Bound to be of interest to all those with a love of Lynn and its history, copies of the book should now be available from True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum, and a book signing and reception will take place at the museum between 11am and 1pm on Saturday, April 5.

My film recommendation of the week is another Mafia-themed movie entitled The Alto Knights, starring Robert De, in a dual role as 1950s mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. The movie has received mixed reviews, but not to be missed!

I am not alone in recommending the highly praised four-part series Adolescence, available to watch currently on Netflix. Superb acting, serious contemporary themes and a clever plot, this classic show stars Stephen Graham as the father of son Jamie Miller, played by young actor Owen Cooper, who is accused of murdering a fellow female pupil.

The youngsters are in their early teens and there’s lots to ponder over, especially for parents bringing up children in these dangerous, modern times.

And so to music. King’s Lynn Festival Chorus with The British Sinfonietta will perform Britten’s Saint Nicholas and Rutter’s Magnificat next Saturday, April 5, starting 7pm, Lynn Minster being the venue. Ben Horden conducts and Jonathan Hanley is the tenor soloist. It should be an exciting musical evening - under 16s go free and tickets are available from 01553 764864.

It is always well worth visiting musicintheburnhams.com to see what the musical menu consists of currently.

A musical evening featuring a pianist, soprano and musical comedian will be held on April 12. Sounds intriguing, the entertainment starts at 7pm, the venue being Burnham Overy Village Hall. Visit the website to find out more.

Turandot by Puccini is the opera to be streamed from The Royal Opera House at selected cinemas. Lynn’s Alive Corn Exchange Cinema will present the opera on the evening of April 1 at 7.15pm and 2pm on the afternoon of April 6. Tickets can be booked on 01553 764864.

Enjoy the musical Six, live in cinemas! It’s showing from April 6 at Lynn’s Alive Corn Exchange Cinema. Again, contact the box office on 01553 764864 for tickets.

There is an exciting Easter Holiday programme of fun events being held between April 5 and 22 at Lynnsport, St James Pool, Downham Oasis and Glebe House School. Booking is, of course, advisable for all activities via alivewestnorfolk.co.uk.

Westacre Theatre has no shortage of fine events and entertainment being presented this season. Dr Strangelove is streamed live from The National Theatre next Thursday at 7pm and then there are productions with curious titles like Page to Semi Stage and Alligators. To find out more and discover what’s being presented, visit Westacre Theatre.

Lastly, St Nicholas’ Chapel, Lynn, seems to be the place to enjoy many musical delights at the end of April. I notice gigs featuring stars from The Commitments, Queen, The Sheringham Shantymen, Genesis and The Carpenters! Details to follow… can’t wait!
