Review of Calamity Jane at Norwich’s Theatre Royal: New production starring Carrie Hope Fletcher has real feelgood factor
Our reviewer went to see Calamity Jane at Theatre Royal, Norwich. Here is what she thought…
This new production, starring the award-winning West End star Carrie Hope Fletcher, blows into Norwich for the week.
It’s a delicious step back in time as it stays true to the 1953 movie, which starred Doris Day as the high-spirited and fearless Calamity - more at ease in her deerskin trousers and riding shotgun than in a kitchen and a frock!
Vinny Coyle as Wild Bill Hickok, the role made famous by Howard Keel, has some great moments as he and Calamity finally get together, and do look out for Samuel Cutler as hoofer Francis Fryer who is a real comic highlight.
There are some terrific songs which have really stood the test of time including Just Blew in from the Windy City, the Black Hills of Dakota, Secret Love and The Deadwood Stage (Whip-Crack-Away) and the audience are encouraged to join in at certain times.
Mention must go to the cast who sing, dance and play musical instruments - and make it all look rather easy!
Gosh Almighty - this is a plum fancy show with a real feelgood factor, especially if you love a love story.
The show continues until Saturday. Visit www.norwichtheatre.org
