Norfolk Symphony Orchestra’s recent concert at King’s Lynn’s Alive Corn Exchange was a ‘passionate’ performance, says reviewer Andy Tyler

Reviewer Andy Tyler shares his thoughts on Norfolk Symphony Orchestra’s recent concert…

Concertgoers recently stepped East by attending the latest Norfolk Symphony Orchestra concert at Lynn’s Alive Corn Exchange which consisted of music by Borodin, Sibelius and Tchaikovsky.

An enthusiastic and full audience responded positively to Borodin’s melodious and atmospheric journey through Central Asia, Sibelius’s one-movement subtle Seventh Symphony, with its clever interweaving of melodic themes, and Tchaikovsky’s deeply personal Fifth Symphony, which encompasses a wide range of his innermost feelings.

Ultimately, however, the composer triumphs over the negative elements in his life and the music expresses this. The music in the symphony contains many contrasts, at times dramatic, lyrical, tender, and passionate.

All sections of the orchestra contributed with conviction to the performances of the works and took on the technical challenges the pieces presented with confidence. Some fine solos were performed.

Thanks also to Alice Ruffle the orchestra’s talented leader, and musical director Steve Bingham, for enabling the audience to enjoy first-class performances and interpretations of these fine works.

We look forward to the orchestra’s next concert on Sunday, May 18, also at Lynn’s Alive Corn Exchange, starting at 3.30pm.

Tickets are available now and the programme will consist of music by Tower, Finzi and Dvorak’s Symphony No 9, ‘From The New World’. Sarah Williamson will be the soloist in Finzi’s clarinet concerto. Definitely a firm date for your diary!
